Good Mentorship = Results
I have been lucky enough to have worked with some of the industry’s finest coaches, and from them I have learned a lot. My interest in being strong began, like it does for many men, as a boy. To be strong meant to dominate. I wish I knew then what I know now: if I had have, I’d have been the strongest kid in my class!
Having excellent teachers means I’ve been able to improve myself to limits I never would have believed possible. As an 18-year old, I remember in a Bench Press competition, I couldn’t even lift 213 lbs. At age 48, I pushed a clean 269.5 in an official powerlifting competition. I am stronger today, at age 52, than I was in my teens and 20s. I credit my teachers for that.
What this has translated to, in my personal training business, is the ability to make anyone, anywhere, any time as strong as they would like! Whether or not you just want more strength to be able to garden more effectively, improve your skiing game, drive the ball further in golf or enter a powerlifting competition, I can help you.
Who Are My Teachers?
I first learned about proper strength training from Chris Wilson, a Kinesiologist who knows his stuff. In just 2 ½ short months, he added 15 lbs of muscle to my then – 182 lb frame, while maintaining a body fat level of between 10% and 11%. He also made me strong in the process.
It was here that I learned about the power of compound lifts. For over 2 months I wasn’t allowed to do a single Barbell Curl, Triceps Pressdown, Skull Crusher, or any of the “go-to” exercises I was taught would muscle me up. Regardless, the results were phenomenal, and I grew in size and strength so fast that some thought I might be taking steroids! Note: I have never taken an anabolic steroid, or any other performance-enhancing drug, in my life.
Next, I learned from Dr. Ken Kinakin, author of “Optimal Muscle Training.” I was fortunate enough to have served as a personal trainer in his clinic in 2009, and learned quite a bit about strength training methodology. Himself a competitive powerlifter, I learned from him the benefit of sticking to the basics, and that “less is more”: 20 to 30 minutes of training, 3 to 4 times per week, is enough to notice significant gains in strength, and in body composition.
Finally, I owe a lot to my current strength coach, Karsten Jensen, author of “The Flexible Periodization Method.” Karsten has helped me with both my form, and with exercise selection, to maximize my strength gains. Because of him, I superseded my goal of lifting 1,000 lbs in a powerlifting competition in 2015. My lifts were a total of 1,023 lbs, as follows:
- Bench Press: 269.5 lbs
- Deadlift: 407 lbs
- Squat: 346.5 lbs
If getting stronger is what you need, I can help you.
How do I do it?
Through a properly “periodized” training program. I alter exercises, lifting tempo, repetition ranges, rest periods and weight lifted, all in an organized fashion, to get you to your goal as quickly as possible. Over the past couple of years.
I have created my own variation of Jim Wendler’s “5/3/1” strength training protocol that I find works for my clients: I call it the “Fit in 20 4/3/2/1 Strength Protocol.” It works, and I have seen strength gains of anywhere between 5% and 50% as a result of it. Of course, results vary individually, but this thing really works.
Do you want to do a powerlifting competition? Excellent! I can prepare you for it. Do you just want to be strong? I can do that to. Is there a specific activity you want to be stronger at? No problem. If strength is your goal, we have the tools to get you there.
